Solutioning Session Framework


A DORIS solutioning session is a collection of methods that most commonly adhere to this framework:

1. Welcome 

Objective: Set the tone, introduce the session, and ensure everyone feels comfortable and included.

  • Activities:

    • Brief introduction of facilitators and participants

    • Overview of session objectives and agenda

    • Establish ground rules (e.g., respect, openness, timekeeping)

2. Establish a Common Understanding of the Current State

Objective: Align everyone on the problem space, existing challenges, and constraints.

  • Activities:

    • Present current data, insights, or a problem statement

3. Method #1: Warmup 

Objective: Shift participants into a creative, collaborative, and open mindset.

4. Method #2: Ideation/Wide Divergence 

Objective: Generate a broad range of ideas without judgment or constraints.

Standard: How Might We... Ideation

5. Method #3: Assessment/Initial Convergence 

Objective: Begin narrowing down ideas based on agreed criteria.

Standard: Dot Voting & Select and Explain (Define Ideas)

6. Method #4: Prototyping/Focused Divergence

Objective: Develop selected ideas into tangible concepts or low-fidelity prototypes.

Standard: Rapid Prototyping

7. Method #5: Evaluation/Final Convergence

Objective: Critique, and select the most promising solution(s).

8. Conclusion

Objective: Summarize outcomes, confirm action items, and close the session on a positive note.

  • Activities:

    • Recap key decisions and next steps

    • Gather quick feedback on the session

    • Thank participants and outline follow-up
