Hire contract RAs (as needed)

Purpose

At DORIS, our standard practice is to recruit contract research assistants (RAs) to conduct usability studies. Ideally, we prioritize sourcing RAs from our contractor pool. However, in cases where this isn't feasible, we engage local temp agencies.

Directions

First, contact our contractor pool with all the study details, including timing, client location, payment, and expenses. If we are unable to fill the necessary slots from our contractor pool, proceed with hiring temporary staff according to the instructions listed below.

When hiring temporary staff, it's paramount to select individuals who are committed to daily attendance, physically capable of performing the job, and capable of upholding DORIS's professional standards.

Here are some best practices if we are using temps:

  1. Ensure a surplus of 2-3 additional temps during the training phase to account for potential dropouts.

  2. Conduct interviews with each temporary candidate to assess their suitability. We need to have people who can attend every scheduled tour, be unobtrusive but able to answer any questions asked on site, and will not be overwhelmed by using mobile apps.

  3. Clearly communicate to the agency our need for high-quality candidates. Our studies have strict time limitations, and any absence significantly impacts our data collection. The agency must understand that missed tours due to absences cannot be made up the following day.

  4. In the event of data collection issues at a location that necessitate a study extension, consider utilizing staff from HQ to ensure reliable data collection.
